laude Garamond (?-1561) was attributed to be “the most important type designer of the six-teenth century”. He has gone through a lot of experience as a punch cutter, type designer and book publisher. He was the first type designer to make types, craft the letter punches, and then sell the typeface that was created by these punches. His career contributed to having type creation become a separate industry from the book printing industry. His typeface was seen in various works throughout Europe at his time and long after his death. His type are widely recognizable for its elegance . Many of his type punches were sold after his death, which helps the spread of Garamond type usage throughout Europe.
He pioneered the trend of producing italic and roman fonts that pair with one another. Although he wasn’t the first designer to do so, he developed the inspiration for other type designers to create capitals letters for italic types. Furthermore, his adoption to the roman typeface was important for the France’s printing industry, as this font had gradually replaced the then common blackletter or gothic typeface.
One of his most famous works would be the popular Garamond typeface, modeled after the letters cut by Francesco Griffo in 1495. Another famous story that greatly increased his influence would be the Greek type grecs du roi that was commissioned in 1540 by Robert Estienne, a French royal printer .
